Which rings move, and which do not

A plain band can be opened up or brought in by a bench jeweller without much trouble. A band with stones running through it is a different object. This page says which is which before you order, not after.

Full eternity rings cannot be resized. Ever.

Stones run continuously around the whole band. There is no plain section of metal to cut out, to stretch or to compress, so there is no mechanism by which the circumference can change. This is a property of the object, not a policy we could waive. If the size is wrong, the remedy is a new ring at full price.

What resizing actually involves

Going up: the bench jeweller cuts the shank at the bottom, opens it, adds a piece of matching metal and solders, then files and finishes. Going down: the same cut, a section removed, closed and finished. Either way, the work happens on plain metal at the bottom of the ring, well away from any setting.

That is why the amount a ring can move is a straightforward question about how much plain metal it has. A court band has the whole shank. A half eternity has the lower half. A channel band has a short section. A full eternity has none.

The first resize

If a ring bought here needs adjusting within its stated window, the first alteration is free of charge for twelve months from delivery. In plain terms:

One free alteration per ring, within twelve months of delivery, within the window printed on that ring’s product page.
Postage. You pay to send the ring to us, insured to its full value. We pay to send it back, insured and signed for.
Later alterations, or an alteration on a ring marked as limited, are charged at GBP £45 for plain bands and GBP £85 for set bands, quoted before any work starts.
Not available on any ring marked as unable to be resized, or on any ring where the change asked for is outside the stated window.
Turnaround is usually ten to fourteen working days from receipt.

A resized ring has been altered, which means it can no longer be returned to stock condition. Ask for the alteration only once you are certain, and use the 14-day right to cancel instead if you would rather send the ring back unaltered. Returns and cancellation

Resizing and the hallmark

An ordinary resize does not invalidate a hallmark. The marks sit on a part of the band that is not cut, and the metal is unchanged.

A substantial alteration is different. Where a large change in size means adding a significant quantity of metal, the article must go back to an assay office to be re-tested and re-marked before it can be described as that metal again. One thing we will not say

We do not promise that a ring will fit. We publish the millimetres, we sell a sizer for GBP £5 and refund it against the ring, we state the exact resizing window on every product page, and we mark the rings that cannot be altered in a panel that cannot be dismissed. What we do not do is offer a guarantee that we would have no way of honouring.
